Maintenance Myths–UNMASKED!

All right, all right. There are a lot of ideas about car care out there, but which ones do you follow? We’re here to bust through some maintenance myths and possibly save you a buck or two on your next service appointment.

MYTH: Oil has to be changed every 3,000 miles. It doesn’t hurt. But it is probably a waste of money. Familiarize yourself with your owner’s manual – seriously. Your maintenance schedule is probably not as strict as you think, and you might even be able to go twice this “recommended distance” without getting an oil change.

MYTH: Treating your car with premium gas after running regular for a while is beneficial. Just stick with your recommended octane level and you’ll be all right – the system will stay clean regardless. Some premium grade gas might have extra detergents in it, but a lot of the time that’s just a marketing gimmick. It’s up to you if you want to experiment to see what helps your car have the best performance.

MYTH: Wipe down your dash and tires with protectant compounds to keep them shiny. A lot of these “protecting” wipes on the market actually strip tires of their original protectants, and it’s possible that they actually cause drying and cracking on the dashboard. Stick with warm soap and water instead.

5 Signs You Need New Tires

  1. Bulges, gouges, or cracks
When a tire deflates, it bulges at the sides. This is a sign of low tire pressure or a slow air leak.

  2. Tread wear
The old-school penny test is one way to check your treads: Place a penny into the tread, with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can still see the top of his noggin, the tread is dangerously low. Most modern tires, however, have wear bars: bits of rubber woven into the pattern at a specific depth. You can find the wear bars that go across the groove, and if the tread pattern is worn down to that wear bar, you need to replace the tire.

  3. Tire pressure
Tires deflate at a rate of about one pound per square inch (PSI) per month.

  4. Temperature
Tire pressure drops in extreme cold. The challenge in summer is excessive heat buildup in the tire. If you're heading out on a road trip with an underinflated tire, it will generate more heat and wear out faster.

  5. Vibration
Watch out for vibration or thumping when you're driving. If it feels like it's coming from under the seats, the rear tires may be out of balance. Vibration from the steering wheel could indicate suspension issues.

Get the Junk Out of the Trunk!

Many people unwittingly carry the weight of an extra person in the back of their vehicle. It's important to remove everything you don't use frequently or need in an emergency. Items such as car cleaners or foldable chairs, for example, should be stored elsewhere. Seasonal items, like traction aids for the mud or snow, should be stored in the car only when the season demands it or if you're an active off-roader. Cleaning out your trunk will do more than lift your spirits: The weight you save by shedding excess pounds from your car could be enough to improve both your tire wear and your gas mileage—saving you money every mile you travel.

Tips for Traveling with Pets

It’s usually not as easy as you think it would be. Bringing your best non-human friend on the road with you seems simple enough, right? Not always so. Here are a few tips on how to make travel with your pet easier.

Healthy Start: The last thing you need on the road is a sick pet. Make sure your pet is all set on vaccinations and has the proper certificates if you intend to cross any international/province/state borders.

Frequent Pit Stops:  You pet can get stir crazy just like you! Stop at any designated waiting area or service stop and take it on a little walk. This may increase your travel time, but it is well worth it! Breaks like these also serve as a perfect time to hydrate.

Proper Restraint:  Whether your pet is calm and obedient in the car it is always important to make sure they are safe. No need to roll the windows down for fresh air, you don’t want any debris hitting them in the face. A favorite blanket or pet bed is perfect for a long road trip. Creating a normalcy and routine for car rides helps your pet stay calm.  There are lots of other ways to make you and your pet calm during a car ride lasting anywhere between 5 minutes and 8 hours.

How to Kick Your Summertime Sickness to the Curb

There’s nothing worse than getting a cold this time of year.  The combination of chest congestion and hot weather seems to confuse your body far more than a winter bug would.  But there’s light at the end of the tunnel–light from a sunny beach and poolside fun!  The answer to health and happiness could be hiding in your car.

-SUCK IT UP! Itchy, watery eyes?  Trouble breathing?  Cough?  Could be dust mites.  You know the importance of preventing them in your home–remember to do the same for your car’s interior by vacuuming regularly.

-CLEAN THE VENTS!  Pollen builds in your car throughout the year–especially in the spring when everything is blooming.  Combat sneeze attacks by cleaning the vents in your ride every time you clean your car.

-STIFLE GERMS AT THE SOURCE!  700 different kinds of bacteria can be found inside cars. Only 60 types are found in the average public toilet.  Add it all up and what do you get?  Antibacterial wipes.  In the car.  At all times.

How to Have the Best Auto Show Experience

Auto shows are great events for everyone from the die-hard enthusiast to the merely curious. However, no matter where you are on the car lover scale, it’s important to keep in mind a few tips when you go.
  • Since almost no sales happen during an auto show, make sure to pick up business cards along the way! If you see something you’re interested in buying later on down the road, having those cards will really put you ahead of the game.
  • Check out the show’s official website before you go. It will give you all kinds of information, from the calendar of events to the floor plan to where your interests are going to be located.
  • Be sure to really inspect the cars you truly like! Check out the interior, various features, the engine, and even the trunk! Remember, this could be the car for you, so really get to know it.

The Cool Way to Wash Your Car

If your car has been sitting in the sun or you’ve just taken it for a long drive, you should wait until it cools down before soaping up. Park it in the shade for a couple of hours—or start with the interior. A hot exterior speeds the drying of the soap and water. While that may sound like a good thing, it makes washing more difficult because it increases the chance of spots and soap scum. Avoid the hassle—wait until things cool off before soaping it up!

About Extended Warranties

Once your vehicle's manufacturer warranty expires, it's still important to have coverage in case an unfortunate circumstance occurs. Investing in an extended warranty for your vehicle can help ensure that your vehicle is always in the best mechanical condition and can help you avoid expensive repair bills. An extended warranty is repair coverage that kicks in after the typical manufacturer bumper-to-bumper warranty has expired. This extended warranty will cover most major breakdowns and will help  stabilize the cost of repairs, since the price of parts and labor tends to fluctuate over time. You have the option to purchase this warranty any time before the manufacturer warranty expires. You can even purchase an extended warranty after the manufacturer warranty expires, although the price will go up considerably.

Helpful Spring Cleaning Advice

We oftentimes associate the word "spring" with "cleaning." After all, they do go hand in hand. If you're feeling a little overwhelmed, we have some tips to help you get the job done!

Make a list of what needs to be cleaned in each room. Lists will help you to stay organized, especially if you have a huge project on your plate. Walk through each room and write down what needs to get done. Writing a list out will also help to ensure you have all the cleaning materials needed before you get started, saving me tons of time later.

Make a playlist. Listening to music while you clean will help take your mind off of the task at hand. Not many of us associate cleaning with the word "fun," but music does indeed make cleaning a little bit more thrilling.

Get a trash and donate box/bag. As you go through each room, make sure to declutter. Throw away old magazines and papers from the previous year. Put items you no longer use or need, like that book you bought 10 years ago but never read, in the donate box. Once you’re done cleaning your whole house, itemize your donate pile because you may be able to deduct those donations on your taxes.

Work on one room at a time. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you want to clean your entire home all at once. Try writing down all the rooms in your home on a piece of paper and checking each one off as you go. If you can work on a couple rooms each weekend, you’ll get a lot more done and still have free time on the side.

Set an amount of time to work on each room. It's easy to get distracted. Before you know it, you're looking at items you've forgotten or old photographs. Set a timer so you don’t fall into this trap. You can also use the timer to give yourself a little break here and there. Much like a list, it will help you stay on track.

Get Rid of the Junk in the Trunk

Your car burns gas for energy. It's food for the engine, which is what makes the car run. The more work the car has to do, the more energy it needs. It's why large SUVs have worse gas mileage than small cars. The added weight of the SUV makes the car work harder.

No matter what kind of car you drive, eliminating weight can go a long way toward increasing your car's fuel efficiency. Have a ski or bike rack on your car? Unless you're on your way to a ski trip or bike ride, take it off. That unused rack adds weight and wind resistance. If you're like most people, you probably have some junk in your trunk. Sports equipment, strollers, and gym bags are all hurting your fuel economy. The EPA estimates that for every extra 100 pounds your car caries, it loses 2 percent in fuel economy. By cleaning up your act, you can start on the road to saving.

How to Properly Test Drive a Used Car

When test driving a used vehicle, it’s always best to take the car on both local roads and highways. In different environments, you can get a good feel for how the car responds and performs. On local roads, you can feel how the car shifts and responds to sharp turns. You’ll also get a good idea on the condition of the brakes with stop-and-go. With a trip on the highway, you can note if the engine runs smoothly or not. While on a test drive, keep your eyes and ears open. Make sure to note any unusual engine noises and whether or not all of the electronics in the car are working properly.

Vent Windows

Vent or “wing” windows were popular in the pre-air conditioning era of automotive manufacturing. They were convenient for many purposes that are still valid today. For example, on days when it’s cool enough to open windows rather than run the A/C, the vent windows allowed air to circulate freely without it streaming in your face or messing up your hair. Smokers also appreciated being able to flick their ashes out the “no-draft” without the fear of them flying back inside the vehicle. Did you have a vehicle with vent windows? What did you think of them?

Rear-Enders: Common Car Accidents

Did you know that rear-enders are one of the most common types of car accidents? Rear-ending results when one car collides into the back of car in front of it. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, this type of crash accounts for 29 percent of all accidents. A 2007 NHTSA study found that drivers involved in rear-end crashes were “routinely engaged in activities that divert their attention from the forward roadway while driving,” and 64 percent of those involved in rear-end crashes were not looking at the road at the time of the crash.

To help avoid rear-ending another vehicle because of inattention, always pay attention to your surroundings, particularly the street and other vehicles. Make sure your cell phone is safely put away and focus your attention to the road and your speed.
