The all new 2012 Civic Sedan has been accorded "2011 Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) based on more stringent standards implemented in 2010. The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries, and property damage — from crashes on the nation's highways.
To determine crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — the Institute rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal or poor, based on performance in high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test, plus evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. To earn “TOP SAFETY PICK for 2011”, a vehicle must have good ratings in all the four tests. In addition, the winning vehicles must offer electronic stability control. The 2012 Civic Sedan received top ratings in each category including frontal offset, side impact and rear impact crash safety tests and the new roof-strength test.
